Chapter Six

There are too many threats to deal with in the modern era and I fear that the number of traps and criminals will only increase as time goes on. It has become common on the web that any website someone visits can lead to hackers gaining access to personal information by simply tracking the person’s activity on the site. It is also unfortunately a difficult issue to deal with for sending emails when spammers get involved by providing information through an email and it leads the viewer to a spoofed site that steals passwords and even bank account access. I am always careful with what I view whether it is on a website or an email because I am aware of what threats are capable of doing to my computer. As hard as I try to be careful of what I browse, it is only inevitable that someday, there will be something that I might come across that will ruin my computer. At the beginning of college, my family bought a PC, so that my brother and I can work at the house because of the pandemic that occurred a few years ago. One of the things that was needed for the class that my brother took was to download a video chat program called Zoom needed to communicate with the instructor. What we did not realize after Zoom was installed was that it was infecting our computer with malware, and we had to get the computer fixed because of it. My family could have decided to get a security software app such as Norton to block any malicious software, but it unfortunately costs a lot of money just to install it on one computer. The only thing that we can do is to be precautious of what we browse and install on the web even though there is not much that we can do to counteract. There are some simple things to do such as to check the padlock icon to see if a site is secure or to only use cookies on sites where there is no account set up, but it is only the least that even a single person can do from getting their computer damaged.
